Post-delivery care

At about four to eight weeks after the delivery of your, you will have a checkup called a postnatal check-up. During the checkup, Dr Motsema will if you are physically and emotionally healthy and that you're adjusting well to motherhood. Your baby will also be checked to make sure he/she is growing healthily.

In the first couple of months after the birth of a baby, most women do not experience major health concerns and will revert back to their prepregnant health status. However, it's important to have a general assessment to reassure you that you are healthy and coping well with the transition to motherhood.

Your post-natal checkup is the ideal opportunity for you to consult with Dr Motsema about any concerns you have following the birth of your baby. Dr Motsema will offer you advice and possible treatment. He will also refer you to a specialist for further treatment if necessary.

Dr Motsema can also help with family planning after giving birth, including birth control. For most women, it is best to wait at least 18 months between giving birth and falling pregnant again. Too little time between pregnancies increases your risk of premature birth and other complications. Talk to Dr Motsema about birth control options so that you don’t get pregnant again too soon.

A postnatal check-up for a new mother includes:

  • Examining your general health
  • Checking health conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure
  • Examining your incision (If you had a caesarian section, or tear during vaginal delivery)
  • Checking your emotional and mental well-being
  • Examining your ovaries uterus, and cervix
  • Examining your breasts for any abnormalities
